Donate your car in Albany before midnight December 31 and you may deduct the vehicle’s sale price on your 2024 federal tax return. Capital Wheels makes it simple: we schedule a free pickup anywhere in the Capital District, your donation date is locked in as of pickup, and once your car sells, Heritage for the Blind (a 501(c)(3), EIN 58-2164446) mails you the IRS Form 1098-C required for deductions over $500. If your vehicle sells for more than $500, your deduction is the actual gross sale price, not the Kelley Blue Book value. If it’s $500 or less, you can generally deduct up to $500 or the fair market value, whichever is less, using a written acknowledgment.

Vehicle sale and IRS-ready documentation
Within 30 days of saleCapital Wheels manages the sale of your vehicle for Heritage for the Blind. After it sells, you’ll receive either IRS Form 1098-C (if it sells for more than $500) or a written acknowledgment (if $500 or less). By law, these are mailed within 30 days of the sale for your tax records.
Claim your deduction on your tax return
At tax-filing timeAt filing, you itemize deductions on Schedule A. For vehicles sold over $500, you generally deduct the actual gross sale price shown on Form 1098-C. For $500 or less, you may deduct up to $500 or fair market value, whichever is lower. Always consult a tax professional about your specific situation.
Year-end tax deduction facts
Deduction equals actual sale price (over $500)
If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, the IRS generally limits your deduction to the car’s gross sale price—not Kelley Blue Book or an estimate. That sale price will appear on Form 1098-C from Heritage for the Blind for use on your tax return.
Form 1098-C for donations over $500
When your vehicle’s sale price exceeds $500, Heritage for the Blind will mail you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days after the sale. This form shows the sale price and is required for claiming a deduction over $500. Keep it with your records and give a copy to your tax preparer.
Written acknowledgment for $500 or less
If your vehicle sells for $500 or less, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment instead of Form 1098-C. In that case, you may generally deduct up to $500 or the vehicle’s fair market value, whichever is lower. This letter, plus your pickup confirmation, supports your deduction.
You must itemize on Schedule A
To benefit from a car donation tax deduction, you must itemize your deductions on Schedule A of your federal Form 1040. If you claim the standard deduction instead, you cannot separately deduct your vehicle donation. Ask your tax professional which approach is better for you.
Donate by Dec 31 to deduct this tax year
The IRS uses the date you donate—not the date the car sells. As long as your vehicle is picked up on or before December 31 in the Albany area, it generally counts as a donation for that tax year. Keep your pickup confirmation as proof of timely donation for your records.
